Spit Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure Project

The Spit Road bicycle route from Spit Bridge to Parriwi Road is part of the RTA Regional route and is critical to linking cyclists from the northern beaches to the city.

Over 400 cyclists commute over Spit Bridge every day.

Council in partnership with the RTA engaged consultants to develop three concept designs to resolve conflicts between vehicles, pedestrian and cyclists on Spit Road between the bridge and Parriwi Road.

The concept designs were on public exhibition in October/November 2011.

The results of the public consultation were reported to the Council Meeting of 7 February 2012, and Council resolved to endorse Option 2.

Option 2 is a two directional bicycle path on the western side of Spit Road from Parriwi Road to the Spit Bridge. The option includes a shared path underpass at Spit Bridge and an upgrade to the Spit West bus stop to comply with disability access requirements.

Detailed designs of Option 2 are now being prepared by consultants.

What is the status of these plans including timelines for implementation & funding.

Mosman Council July 17, 2012 at 8:21 am # · Report comment

Currently the final changes are being made to the detailed designs.

The works are scheduled to go on tender in September/October 2012.

The construction is scheduled for later in 2012 or early 2013.

The funding agreement between Council and RMS has not yet been finalised.

Please advise what is the current status/timeline for the Spit Bridge – Parriwi Road bike infrastructure improvements.

Mosman Council November 19, 2012 at 11:56 am # · Report comment

The works are currently out to tender and close on 22 November. These will take a few weeks to be assessed and the matter then needs to go to Council for formal approval.

I would anticipate work commencing next year subject to satisfactory tenders being received.

Any further guidance on the timeline of these works, e.g. when are the tenders due to go to Council ?

Mosman Council February 18, 2013 at 3:20 pm # · Report comment

The construction works are due to commence in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the prompt response. That is good news.

Are you able to advise, if not now, closer to the time, what closures/restrictions there will be to the existing paths during the construction period ? Will safe, alternative routes be advertised & available during the period of construction ?

Can you also advise if fencing is to be installed on the road side of the shared path as it goes up onto the Spit Bridge, from the on-ramp to where the current fencing stops ?

This is a safety matter that I raised at the Council’s bike plan meeting last year and was told that applications had been made to the RTA to obtain funding for such safety fencing and it was expected to be received favourably. For there to be no fence between high-speed traffic and a busy shared path on a slope seems inappropriate.

Thanks again

Fences will be installed near the end of the works.

Can you provide an update on the status of the works at Spit Bridge, i.e. when are they due to finish.

Mosman Council April 03, 2013 at 1:51 pm # · Report comment

The works are scheduled to finish in June 2013.

Good to see that some fencing has been installed on the west side of Spit Bridge where the revised shared path meets the bridge pavement. Is there any consideration of putting more fencing in as the unfenced areas are still a significant risk – on both east & west pavements,

Mosman Council June 25, 2013 at 3:42 pm # · Report comment

There are no more fences to be installed as a part of this project.
